This marks the entrance to the Newry Shipping Canal. Completed in 1742, it is the first summit canal built in Ireland or Great Britain. It provided shipping access from Lough Neagh to Carlinford Lough. The lock gates here were originally built in 1850. They were totally in replaced in 2016. The Greenway path runs alongside the canal and the river to the heart of the city of Newry 5.7 Km away. Great place for a stroll or a cycle in stunning scenery.
