Perched on a wild coastal headland Mussenden Temple holds a dramatic position 120 feet above the Atlantic. Built in 1785 as a summer reading room with a unique design by the owner of Downhill Demesne, Frederick Augustus Hervey, Bishop of Derry. He had it built in memory of his dear cousin Frideswide Mussenden, who died at the age of 22.
