Crom Estate - What a wonderful place to visit on a sunny bank holiday weekend! The ruins of the old Crom Castle on the banks of Upper Lough Erne are fascinating. It can be found on the extensive National Trust Crom Estate which covers 2000 acres. Built in the early 17th century it was lost to a fire in 1764. Some additional parts were added in the 19th century. It has been the keeper of many stories across the ages. The ruins show much of the skill and huge effort that must have gone into the construction of the original castle and the subsequent additions in the1800s. It affords spectacular views across the Lough including the folley that is Crichton Castle on Gad Island in the middle. Impossible not to think of lives of the people who built, worked in, lived in and owned such a place as Crom.
