The Cistercian monastery here was originally founded in 1193 by Affreca, the wife of the Anglo-Norman John de Courcy. Possibly the first in Ireland to be founded by a woman. The story has it that was built as a thanksgiving for her surviving a storm at sea. Grey Abbey is also believed to be the first church in Ireland to be built in the Gothic style. The abbey has had a chequered history over the centuries.
