I continue to be fascinated by old buildings and doorways in particular. I always try to imagine who built such a structure and who built it with such skill. This a photo of part of the deserted village on Achill Island in Co Mayo. Who lived in this village and what was the community like here? How did they survive hard times? There are around 100 houses in the village, aligned north-south and parallel to each other. Because of The many evictions for non-payment of rent 1845-49 famine, the village was eventually abandoned. It continued to be used during the summer months up to the 1940’s when cattle were grazed on the mountainside above the village.
