This is a photo of the now abandoned Ballyness pier, near Falcarragh, in Co Donegal. Across the bay is Magheraroarty with its beautiful strands. Bloody Foreland is just visible on the horizon. At the end of the pier, the builders kindly left us the date of their labours. It was built using a grant of £487, one of hundreds of schemes across the land to provide labour and to establish a fishing industry during the ravages of the Irish famine.
